Wheatgrass or Organic Wheatgrass are very trendy with people who like the healthy living (I am one of them – Yes guilty).
For the past few years the trend was different. Organic wheatgrass was purchased and given to our cats and dogs. You could find it in all sort of shops, especially the specialied cats and dogs ones.
But did you ever think that this type of grass could be beneficial to you? At the end of the day, if it is beneficial to a dog, and dogs diet is mostly meat, why would they eat grass? May be it has some properties that is good for us too.
Where to buy wheatgrass or organic wheatgrass?
First I’d like to tell where you can buy wheatgrass. This is just in case you do not have some shops that sells it near you.
The other I asked myself where can I buy wheatgrass around me. I had no clue. But, as I do most of my shopping online, I just took my computer and went ahead and got some shipped directly to my house. Click on the below picture to get it shipped to your house. Simple? Isn’t.
What is wheatgrass?
I have to say that wheatgrass is not the same type as the grass you have in your garden. We call wheatgrass the young sprouts of wheat. Quite different to the grass you mow in your garden.
The sprouts are quite powerful. They have a high content of antioxidants and substantial amount of essential nutrients.
What are the hidden contents of wheatgrass?
One thing is for sure, it is one of the most alkalizing food we should all eat. Consider eating it everyday.
In a quick, short and brief summary, this plant contains proteins, fibers and antioxidants.
And that’s not all, it also has vitamins A, B6, C, E and K as well as potassium, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, zinc, iron, copper, manganese and selenium. DOT!
It is rich in chlorophyll. This is a known substance that has a chemical structure similar to hemoglobin. So if you eat wheatgrass, you will eat a protein that support your red blood cells carrying oxygen to your body’s tissues.
What you need to know is that the similarities this plant has with hemoglobin, allows to increase oxygen concentration in your blood. And guess who eat this plant a lot to absorb a maximum of chlorophyll? High caliber sportsmen and women.
There surely is a good reason for that (increase oxygen in blood stream mean increasing the level of performance too – Now you know). Don’t tell this secret to anyone else. 😉
This particularity of wheatgrass has attracted the attention of the medical sector. A study published in 2004 (I could not get hold of the most recent one – sorry), showed that patients eating wheatgrass and suffering from thalassemia (a blood disorder), did not need as much blood transfusion as the ones who did not.
Think of it. You reduce the number of blood transfusion means you reduce the number of days in hospital, you reduce the cost associated with hospital, and you reduce the stress associated with this too.
Wheatgrass and cancer
If you know the alkaline diet, then you must use wheatgrass. It is one of the main ingredients that is used for the alkaline diet. It is good against inflammation and cancer. Eating wheatgrass simply alkalize your body.
What you need to know is that researcher have demonstrated eating this sprout wheat fights against ulcerative colitis. It is also good against both liver and colon cancer. Some calls it wheatgrass cancer.
Is this grass gluten-free?
Funny enough, yes. It is gluten free, so if you are allergic, then you can eat it with no remorse.
You may ask yourselves why. Simple, the grass is cut and eaten before it forms the cereals (that contains gluten).
Another thing you need to know is that gluten is only present in the seed. More precisely in the kernel itself. So it is not present in the stems or leaves.
How to consume wheatgrass?
There are many ways to consume wheatgrass. You have people who loves it in powder. If you want to try it, you can find some best wheatgrass powder by clicking here. Just scroll down and you’ll find many different powder.
You can also drink wheatgrass. You just need one of the best wheatgrass juicer like the one described bellow.
What is the best wheatgrass juicer?
It is difficult to answer this question. But let me try to provide you with the best wheatgrass juicer reviews.
There are mainly two types of juicers. The manual type and the electrical one. To be honest, it does not matter much which one your prefer. Let me provide you with information on both.
The best manual wheatgrass juicer
There are tons of manual juicers. But the one I am going to briefly present is the one I have. So that’s why I will tell you about, and also because it is very easy to use it and it produce very nice juices.
This is one of the top if not the the top manual juicer. First, it does not consume electricity. And again, if you are like me, and like to preserve the environment, why use electrical power while you can use your arms and hands?
Second, it is so simple that I use it with my 5 year old daughter. The reality is that the team who designed this juicer are so confident you’re gonna love it, they just provide a guarantee you’ve been dreaming for. Think of it, they say, if you are not happy, just send it back.
And this is true. If you are not happy, just do it. The manufacturer has been out there for over 10 years. So you are sure that if the product was not liked by the audience, the company would have long gone. This is probably the best guarantee you can have.
With this juicer, you can do many different types of juice. I use it with wheatgrass, but I also use it with spinach, collard greens, lettuce, parsley, etc. Anything that is green and has leaves, then I’ll use it.
I did find it easy to clean and my daughter likes playing with it and make me my usual morning juice (though she needs me to turn it). She just collect the juice at the other end.
The juicer comes with a table clamp (necessary) and a suction base. It is very light, so you can take it with you while you are travelling.
Note that you’ll be pleased to see that the juicer will come with extra items that are most likely to wear out or break through time, such as bushings etc.
Overall, a well thought machine to make some great manual juice.
The best electric wheatgrass juicer
Again, there are endless number of electric wheatgrass juicers. I have to say that if you buy the best wheatgrass, then you either need one of the best manual or electric juicer.
No, seriously, this is a masterpiece equipment. It is a device that is referred to as a masticating juicer, meaning a low speed juicer. You may tell me what’s that mean?
Let’s see this in numbers: the standard juicers process the ingredients at high speed, say 1,500 to 15,000 rpm (rotation per minute).
Now the Omega J8006 process the ingredients at 80 rpm. That’s really slow. So Why on earth would you do this?
The idea is that by turning slow, most of the healthy enzymes are protected. This slow motion also prevents from food oxidation. By avoiding this, the food can therefore be stored for about 72 hours before it starts degradation.
When you say slow speed, you also need a strong motor to drive the shaft. This is what this juicer has. This is why you can do both Wheatgrass juices, but also fruit type juices. You have the ultimate two in one tool.
The downside of this juicer is that it makes noise. Yes, like anything else electric with an electrical motor, you must expect some noise. So if you prefer not to have noise surrounding you, use the above manual device. Otherwise, I am sure you’ll be happy with this juicer.
By the way, you can alsway buy wheatgrass juice, and if you ask yourselves where to buy wheatgrass juice; then just click on the above picture, and scroll down, you’ll find them.
What is the recommended daily intake of wheagrass?
It is recommended to consume 1 to 2 ounces of fresh juice a day. Alternatively you can consume 1 tablespoon of wheatgrass powder 1-3 times a day, or finally try 7-10 wheatgrass capsules daily (if you do not like the taste of wheatgrass).
How to grow your own wheatgrass
Now then, you are wanting to grow this grass yourselves? Nothing is easier as long as you follow the below instructions. Here’s what you need to do:
- Organic winter wheat seeds or wheat berries;
- Fine mesh strainer;
- A clean cotton towel;
- A large glass bowl;
- A medium-sized sprouting tray.
First, you need to rinse the seeds. Use fresh cold water through the strainer. Note that I collect some rain water and use it to do this particular task.
Now, put them in a recipient and pour rain water. Let them soak for about 8 to 12 hours.
After this, rinse them well and drain them using a strainer. Leave them in the strainer or bowl. Keep rinsing them for three days, once a day. When you see them sprouting, it is time to put them in a sprouting tray. What you have to do now is to spread them evenly in the tray.
Next, get some baking soda. Pour two tablespoons of baking soda into a recipient. Add some warm (not hot) water. Put the mix in a spray bottle. Mix vigorously the lot. Spray the sprouts. This will keep them away from mold.
Finally cover the tray with a towel. Leave it for 2 to 3 days with direct sunlight.
Continue to spray the sprout once a day with the baking soda mixture. Remove the towel. You’ll should have fantastic, healthy and nice long sprouts that you can harvest.
Now it is time for you to eat, drink or cook it. Enjoy the home made wheatgrass.
