I have always tried to get rid of my orange peels in one way or another. The best that I used to do is to make compost with them.
As I got into healthy eating, healthy healing and a healthy lifestyle as a whole, I explored new ways to use these.
Here I provide you with three tips you can use orange peels for. And these are great for you.
Why is orange good for you?
Besides that eating an orange is a good source of vitamin C, they are also very rich in vitamin A and B, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, soluble fiber, potassium, and other nutrients.
Why are orange peels good for you?
I have always been a partisan of not throwing anything if we can. Orange peels fall in this category.
If the inside of the fruit is good, then the outside should be too. We just need to know how to use it.
So orange peels are great because they contain more phytonutrients and flavonoids than the inner pulp. Ouch. Does that make sense to you?
At first, it did not to me. But hey, read below what the phytonutrients and flavonoids can do for you.
What are Phytonutrients?
Phytonutrients are basically foods that contain thousands of natural chemicals. These chemicals help the plant to fight germs, fungi, bugs, and other threats. In essence, they are there to protect the plant. These are the superhero of plants.
So think of it, if you have more Phytonutrients on the skin of the orange, why would you not make use of these?
Note that phytonutrients are also known as phytochemicals.
What are flavonoids?
Flavonoids provide health benefits as they have antioxidant effects. They are can be found in many fruits and vegetables including orange peels.
So here you are. You have these two components in orange peels and their content is much higher in the skin than inside of the orange itself.
Benefits of orange peels
They are so many benefits that orange peel has that this article would be too long to read. I selected only three which affects most of us:
1. WHITENS TEETH
Fresh orange peels are the best solution if you suffer from yellow tinge accumulated on your teeth. Orange peel can work as a teeth-staining reducer, and this is very effective on smoking stains.
Orange peel contains a compound known as d-limonene. Rub fresh orange peel with its inner side over your teeth for 2-3 minutes.
Rinse your teeth with lukewarm water. To feel satisfied with the results, repeat the treatment 2 times daily. Another use of the orange peel in the oral health is preparing a paste.
Mix powdered orange peel, little water, and some dried leaves. Brush your teeth twice a day for a few weeks with this paste.
2. REMOVES BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS
Powdered orange peel can be used as a natural exfoliating agent that can remove the dead skin cells and dirt from your skin. Additionally, it will prevent the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads.
- To prepare the paste, take equal amounts of plain yogurt and orange peel powder;
- Once the pasta is ready, apply it on your face and neck gentle circular motions;
- Allow the paste to act for 15-20 minutes;
- Use wet hands and gently rub off the paste;
- Use this solution every other day, in order to reduce the whiteheads and blackheads.
3. AIDS WEIGHT LOSS
Orange peels are extremely helpful in the process of weight loss because many nutritional components of oranges are in the peel. Include orange peel tea in your weight- loss diet instead of coffee and sodas.
Here are the instructions on how to prepare this magical tea:
- Dry the peels from several oranges on a dark and cold place;
- Pun only one tablespoon of them in 1 cup of boiling water;
- Cover and steep for 10 minutes;
- Add a little raw honey after you remove the peels;
- 2 cup of this herbal tea on a daily basis will do the trick.
Important: make sure you wash the peels well, and always use peels from organic oranges only. Other oranges may have some pesticides. So try to avoid them. If not, try and wash them with vinegar.
