Bitter melon has been used for centuries as a fruit that can heal a number of diseases. It has mainly been used as a food and then for medicine.
Bitter Melon is scientifically known as Momordica charantia (M. Charantia).
But it has other names, all depending on the country such as karela, balsam pear, or bitter gourd.
I have to say that it is a very popular plant in indigenous populations of Asia, South America, India, the Caribbean, and East Africa.
The reason for its popularity is that it can be used to treat diabetes-related conditions.
However, traditionally, it was mainly offered to people with high blood pressure conditions.
Further to the above applications, this fruit has proven to be effective with individuals that have skin infections, kidney stones and to reduce painful menstruation.
As time went on, this fruit has shown to be great talents to cure and/or treat colic, malaria, high cholesterol, diarrhea, glaucoma, stomach cramps, hemorrhoids, and finally but not the least fever.
But why is this fruit so good and active at curing and treating all of the above diseases?
The reason is it contains many different compounds that we all need to have a healthier life.
For instance, it contains alkaloids, glycoside, peptides, and plenty of acids that we dearly need.
It also contains cucurbitins (Cucurbitin is an amino acid and a carboxypyrrolidine), charantin, cucurbitacins, momordine, momorcharins.
Bitter melon treating diabetes
Researchers at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica demonstrated that bitter melon can cure Type 2 diabetes.
To do so, bitter melon acts as a catalyst to activate AMPK (Activated Protein Kinase).
AMPK is the protein that promotes glucose transporters to the surface of your cells.
In essence, the more transporters on your cells’ surfaces, the more glucose transported from your blood circulation into tissues of your body.
What you need to understand from this is that your body will start promoting the movement of glucose in your muscle tissues. By doing so, you’ll lower your blood sugar levels.
In one of the many publications of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, a team of researchers showed that bitter melon has a modest hypoglycemic effect.
They also showed that consuming this fruit will lead to a significant reduction of fructosamine levels from their initial baseline.
This is true for individuals with type-2 diabetes who received 2,000 mg/day.
However, experts described that the hypoglycemic effect of bitter melon was somehow less performant when compared to metformin at 1,000 mg/day.
Bitter melon stops breast cancer
Saint Louis University researchers have discovered the positive effect of absorbing bitter melon extract.
Absorbing the extract modifies how the body reacts at the cellular level. This leads to a series of events in your body that stop breast cancer cells from multiplying.
But the real good news is that absorbing the extract of this fruit leads to killing bad cells without side effects.
The lead researcher defined that the melon extract generates a number of signal transduction pathways.
Such pathways induce breast cancer cells to die.
With the above scientific evidence, it is clear that this melon extract must be in your daily or weekly diet.
What you can do is to use it as a dietary supplement. Like this, you’ll provide your body the means and tools to prevent breast cancer.
Where to find bitter melon extract?
I have to say this, and it is, unfortunately, true that bitter melon extract is not something you can find everywhere. But I have put together the below table that will help you in selecting the product that suits you.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I have put together a mixture of cheap and more expensive products. Chose what you feel is right for you.
Conclusion
I have to say that this fruit is one of the best fruit you should think of when you want to fight diabetes and breast cancer.
What is good about it is that you can eat it in a number of ways.
For instance, you can eat it as a fruit and you can add it to your smoothies to drink it.
But if you do not like bitter things, why not trying it as a herbal supplement? It is easier to do it that way.
And finally, you can always get some extract of the fruit.
Anyway, you now have the tools to fight both breast cancer and type 2 diabetes. No excuse!
