A lot of research has been conducted since the 1970s on Guanabana fruit and its ability to heal a number of diseases.
One such claim is that the fruit can cure cancer. Another one of such claims is that Guanabana is an antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections. But how true are these claims?
Are these just selling speeches from people who want to make money? Or is there some form of truth in the statements we find everywhere? Omigy has investigated the claims. The findings are clear.
Can Guanabana fruit cure cancer?
Guanabana fruit, or Soursop as some call it, has got potential to help in treating cancer.
Experts in the field have studied the fruit and its extracts. The findings are encouraging, but the reality may come to you as a shock.
Yes, the findings are good. However, the work aimed at a very small portion of the population, and therefore it cannot be meaningful (scientifically speaking). (1)
Similarly, a lot of the findings are based on laboratory research and therefore one cannot say for definite if this fruit can be a great natural remedy for cancer.
What do the experts say?
Experts have no doubt that the results are encouraging.
Dr. Barrie Cassileh discussed the state-of-the-art of the research in 2008. He described that the plant including its fruits, seeds, and leaves have properties for treating a number of diseases.
At the time, he gave real tangible examples. For instance, the ethanolic extracts of the guanabana plant were effective against Herpes simplex virus.
It was also effective against Leishmania, a protozoan that causes leishmaniasis.
Finally, the extract was also effective against the freshwater mollusk Biomphalaria Glabrata. This mollusk acts as a host for the parasitic worm Schistosoma Mansoni.
Developments for people with depression
Further to the above, there were some interesting developments for people with depression. Guanabana may have anti-depressive properties. That’s because the plant has abilities to stimulate serotonin receptors.
In essence, guanabana has demonstrated that it can fight cancer. But it has done so in vitro and a small portion of the human population.
Elsa, Chief Editor at Omigy said, “It is clear that there is a lack of human data on the effectiveness of the fruit’s extract on cancer. There are many websites that do promote the plant as a whole and the fruit in particular.”
She added, “I believe that caution is required for us all as the studies have not been finalized. Obviously, we need to be careful as there is no real scientific evidence of safety or efficacy on the human race.” (2)
“However, recent research by Paul J, Gnanam et al. Performed in 2013 showed that the extract has 80% of cell inhibition. This is clearly a good sign, though it is not enough to define if these results are replicable.”
Conclusions on Guanabana fruit
It is difficult nowadays to filter through the different studies. The issue is that researchers are not being financed enough to find out if this plant is a real solution to a number of cancers.
Though there are real positive signs, it may take years before enough research can provide a decisive answer to this question.
Nevertheless, nothing prevents you to eat this fruit. We can use the proverb, “better be safe than sorry”.
So, eat it, do not abuse it, but try it and see if you feel better health-wise. At the end of the day, no one knows better than you when it comes to your health and your body.
Note that in 2015, another expert, S.G. Damle, investigated this plant and concluded that it has potential. However, he could not provide clarity about it. (3)
He could not say whether this plant is clearly effective for cancer or not. But he concluded that there are studies being undertaken that shows this plant has potential to fight cancer.
He also concluded that there will be, one day, a plant hidden somewhere in the Amazon forest that will provide the answers to our diseases.
Our take on this
At Omigy, we too wish this to be possible and that one day a fruit or plant will provide the answer to cancer-killing disease.
There are a number of cancer-fighting plants that have been scientifically proven to be effective such as tamarind and papaya leaves. These plants clean up your liver and when you flush your liver, you allow it to function properly.
If this is not the case, then you are prone to cancer and other diseases. That is why it is important to have a clean, non-fatty liver so that it can flush diseases.
