Recipe for garlic mashed potato – The ingredients
- Potatoes – Get 1kg or red skinned potato.
- Butter – Make sure the one you have can be used for frying. (3)
- Garlic – 1 garlic clove should be much more than enough. You want to make sure it is finely chopped
- Cheese – I choose grated Gruyere (25g is plenty unless you like to increase the fat content of the recipe – I advise against increasing this). You can use slices of Camembert too if you prefer.
- Single cream or milk – 140 ml is plenty
- Dried white breadcrumbs – I use brown one, but I know all my friends use white. So I put white and I hope you’ll use brown. 25 g is enough.
- Thyme – 2 sprigs or 3 maximum. (4)

Step 1 – Boil the red potatoes.

Alternatively, you just need to boil red potatoes for about 15 mins until they are soft.
Now drain them.
Step 2 – Prepare the garlic cream sauce
Heat up a pan. Then add a little bit of butter (you know the fry type butter).
Split the garlic clove.
Next, place the garlic pieces in the pan.
Stir the pieces for about 1 min, till the garlic soften a bit.
Add the milk or cream (I prefer to use the cream for this).
Heat the mixture through for 2 to three minutes.
Step 3 – Prepare the red mashed potatoes
Add the boiled red potatoes to the pan.
Mash them until they nice and smooth.
Step 4 – Bake the garlic mashed potatoes
The final step in the recipe for garlic mashed potato is to bake the lot.
First, put the oven to 180 deg C if you have a fan. Otherwise, 160 deg C on gas 4.
Pour your mashed potatoes and garlic mixture into a glass type baking dish.
Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top.
Now add the nice Gruyère cheese.
Finally, add the thyme over the top.
When the oven is ready, put the dish in it.
Let it cook for 15 mins.
Normally, by this time the breadcrumbs will be crispy.
And the cheese should be melted.
Trick 1 – You can easily store the dish the day before in the fridge. Then bake it.
Trick 2 – You can store it in your freezer for up to one month. When a surprise guest appears, you just need to put it in your oven after defrosting.
Trick 3 – You can easily bake your garlic dish from frozen. You just need to cook it for 1 hr 15 mins. Just serve the dish to your guests.
Last trick – You can add some pieces of smoked fish or meat.
