What to serve with salmon burgers?

Did you ever ask yourselves what to serve with salmon burgers?

Well, I did a number of times.

Though this is a very trivial question, it is definitely a valid one to ask.

There are thousands and thousands of side dishes that would work well with salmon.

Below I provide you with 3 different side dishes for a nice salmon burger.

But before going into these, you need to know how to make a salmon burger.

For me, the simplest way is to make a fish cake.

1 – Standard chips and a side salad

Salmon burger and chips with side salad

I had to start with this one.

We all know that a burger is served with chips and a side salad.

Well, at least that’s what the specialized food chain lead us to believe. But we can think for ourselves. Can’t we?

Anyway, take some standard potato chips and some nice lettuce with low-fat mayonnaise and you are ready for a nice meal.

Personal and important note:

I want to say that I seldom use this option for my salmon burgers.

For me, salmon plays a critical part in my weekly diet and I do not want to waste it with oily chips.

Salmon is full of healthy omega-3s which are really good for you.

In fact, I have summarised what this fish can do for your health in a thorough article. Click here to find out if you need to eat more salmon.

Even when I use this oily chips option, I try to bake the chips and not cook them in oil.

And if I have guests who’d love to have some oily chips, then I choose grapeseed oil to cook them.

This oil can be used to cook at very high temperature and it is healthier than the other types

It can go even higher cooking temperature than olive oil.

Make it more exotic

I think you always need to think how you can demark yourselves from the standard recipes.

This is no different to the standard old cliché where chips have to be made from white potatoes.

Maybe this time you need to be more adventurous.

My advice is to use sweet potatoes. These are extremely healthy for you as per this article.

To conclude, try to use some sweet potatoes in your recipes as these are full of healthy properties. (1)

2- Sweet and spicy salmon burger with an avocado side dish

what to serve with salmon burgers

I always like to eat something different and this is definitely one of those recipes.

Apart from the side dish, you also need to have a nice topping.

Below I’ll share with you both, the side dish and burger toppings.

I like some sweetness with salmon, so I use mango for that.

Similarly, I like some acidity which I find in tomatoes and I add some pink onions. Here is my recipe.

I call it the salmon salsa burger with an avocado side dish.

Ingredients

  • 2 organic tomatoes nicely diced – you should end up with about 1 cups or a little more.
  • 2 mangoes. Again, make sure they are nicely diced.
  • A bit of freshly squeezed lemon. 1 tablespoon should do. This is good for you (2)
  • Freshly ground pepper.
  • Some salt.

Direction

Pour all of the above ingredients in a bowl.

Now mix them all gently.

Season well with black pepper and salt and leave aside for about 15 minutes.

Now, cook your salmon burger and cut slices of avocado. Note that avocado is really good for your heart. (3)

The final step is to spoon the mango salsa on top of your salmon burger.

Nicely, lay the burger and avocado slices on your plate.  Enjoy your meal.

See the above picture to have an idea as to how the salsa will look on top of the burger.

3- Garlic aioli, mashed potatoes, peas and green peppers side dish

This is a fairly interesting side dish. And it is very good for lunch.

It contains all of the carbohydrates you need. And some green veggies too. So perfect for your body.

Ingredients

  • Mash – 2 medium size potatoes (more if you are a lot of people)
  • Green peas – 2 cups of peas
  • Green peppers – Get a set of colored peppers. Say one green, one yellow and one red. This makes your dish more exotic.
  • Butter or milk – just a little bit

And for the aioli – I chose a roasted aioli recipe to stay on the burger theme:

  • Mustard – 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard. You can choose any other type, but I prefer the French Dijon one.
  • Garlic purrée – Make it yourselves, please. You just need 1 tablespoon. Take 1 small head of garlic and roast it in a 350°F oven for 40 minutes. Now cool it and squeeze it to get the purée. You’re done.
  • Olive oil 1/2 cup extra-virgin and organic if at all possible
  • Lemon juice – 2 teaspoons. Aim for freshly squeezed.
  • Oil – 1/2 cup grapeseed or vegetable oil (I prefer grapeseed oil)
  • Egg – 1 egg yolk
  • Salt and black pepper

Direction for the aioli

Pour the roasted garlic, mustard, and yolk in a bowl of a food processor. Mix for about 10 seconds (or mix by hand, but much harder for about 2 minutes).

Now add the olive oil while the blade is running. Pour the oil slowly.

When done, do the same with the grapeseed oil.

Stop when everything is completely combined.

Normally this should take about 2 minutes.

Just stop the processor.

It is time to add the lemon juice and season the aioli sauce with salt. Give it a good pulse until mixed. Again, stop the processor.

Let the mix sit for about 30 minutes before using it.

Direction for the side dish

Pour water into a pan and add the potatoes. Get the water to boil and check that the potatoes are cooked.

When cooked, peel the potatoes (after they cooled off).

Now mash them and add a little bit of butter and/or milk. If you do not have either, you can always add a little of olive oil.

At the same time, boil the green peas. When cooked dry them out.

Finally, slice the colored bell peppers. See below picture. By the way, you can add green onions on the side too.

Finally, put the aioli cream on top of your burger.

Layout the mash, peas and colored bell pepper onto a plate and serve. Here is how the burger should look like with the aioli.

Conclusion on what to serve with salmon burgers

Now you have 3 ideas on what to serve with salmon burgers.

I went from a very standard idea, that is the chips and salad to more adventurous options (which I prefer);

I would like to take this opportunity to enforce my message that salmon is really good for your health.

It contains healthy fatty acids that your body cannot produce.

You deeply need these fats to avoid severe health conditions.

I put together an article that summarizes the issues you can face if you have a deficiency in fatty acids.

I strongly invite you to read it at this link.

Having said that, I really wish you to have fantastic family parties with the above salmon side dishes.
