Fresh spinach is really good for all of us. However, we seem to forget what Popeye has taught us about them.
I put this article together to briefly remind us of the health benefits of spinach.
And I have decided to summarize spinach nutrition facts too.
What are fresh spinach health benefits?
Fresh spinach is one of those superfoods that are full of nutrients. They are associated with a delicious taste and available all year around.
What I dislike about them is the advert that they have received from the Popeye and Olive cartoon. Though the advert is good in its form, Popeye always ate can type spinach. You know what I mean.
There is nothing wrong with that. But I always like to promote fresh things and if at all not possible will go down the root of frozen or can.
But what’s best? How best to eat them? Read on and you’ll find out:
1- Eat baby spinach
Baby spinach nutrition properties is higher than ‘older’ type spinach. In essence, when selecting them, it is wise to choose the smallest and most tender baby spinach leaves.
The reason is simple. When you buy larger leaves, these will be tougher and more stringy.
If you buy the leaves, make sure to select the ones that are under direct light. Funny enough, these will have more nutrients than the ones that are kept in darkness.
2- Eat cooked fresh spinach for better health benefits
As much as I find this weird, and if you decide to cook your leaves, you’ll literally increase the nutritive value of spinach.
To give you an example, just cook half a cup of spinach and eat them. By doing so, you’ll end up with three ties nutritional value of uncooked spinach.
The rational is that our bodies are not able to break down the raw spinach nutrients. Go ahead a cook your leaves.
3- Exception to the above cooked fresh spinach
Now that I told you to eat cooked spinach, I am going to take that back for one special case.
If you drink spinach smoothies on a regular basis, then scientist have found that this is even healthier that cooked leaves.
That is one special case that I invite you not to forget and please go right away and make yourself a nice juice with the below spinach smoothie recipe.
The easiest way to do this is to mix a number of vegetables and fruit in a blender. Then just blend the spinach. You’ll have a nice green juice.
4- Oxalic acid spinach health benefit
There’s a compound in spinach called oxalic acid, which blocks the absorption of calcium and iron. An easy way to solve this problem is to pair spinach with a food high in vitamin C. Mandarin oranges and cantaloupes spring to mind here. Another way to reduce the power of oxalic acid is to boil the spinach leaves for at least two minutes.
5- Is frozen spinach as good as fresh?
Unfortunately not. Frozen spinach have lower health benefits than fresh ones. So, I would advise you to use them just bought from your local market and eat them the same day.
6- Organic or non organic spinach nutrition facts
I have to say that you definitely need to buy organic type spinach.
Scientist have investigated both and found out that pesticides are heavily used in the spinach sector to give the leaves a nice green color.
So if you do not like pesticides and their potential associated diseases, stick to the organic spinach.
7- Is spinach good for skin?
There are a lot of discussions about spinach being good for our bones and eyes. However, a lot of people forget that there are a lot of skin benefits of spinach.
Again, I want to say it, spinach for skin is great.
The plant contains a lot of minerals and vitamins that makes your skin less dry.
By eating spinach you’ll reduce some itchy skin sensations, and you should get a nice, radiant skin.
I have to say scientists have demonstrate that if you drink fresh, organic spinach juice on a regular basis, then your skin condition should improve dramatically.
8- Is spinach good for digestion?
Yes, you can use this leave to improve your digestion. In addition, this green lovely plant is really good to fight constipation.
It does protects your stomach and lines up your mucus too. All of these are great as they fight ulcers. And finally, you need to know that spinach flushes out toxins from your colon.
Conclusion
Please remember that spinach nutrition for your body is high. The best way to consume them is to make baby spinach smoothies. In essence, spinach with smoothies are really good for your skin, digestions system, against ulcers, for your eyes, etc.
I hope that with all of the above, I have answered the question ‘is spinach good for you?’.
