These famous air fresheners and wall plug-ins are used by almost 75% of American families. And they usually contain phthalates, a potentially dangerous chemical, which is banned from cosmetic products in the United Kingdom.
Fourteen different air sprays, including those labeled “all-natural” and “unscented”, were tested by The National Resources Defense Council. The researchers found that 12 of the 14 tested were positive for the dangerous chemical – phthalates.
Another study has found that the frequently burning paraffin of scented wax candles, in poorly ventilated rooms could be dangerous.
The study has shown that this could be dangerous because when burned, the scented candles give off toluene and benzene, potential carcinogens. The reed diffusers are usually made with dipropylene glycol, and ingredients also used in antifreeze. This ingredient is also dangerous to cats and dogs, or ethanol, and also poses a gander to small children if they ingest the liquid or get it in their eyes.
